Nature/Nuture. 2006. Wood, metal, springs, canvas, acrylic.
A self portrait exploring the idea of human order imposed on the natural order. The painting is stretched and tensioned into the wood framework with 50 small springs. Inspired by the imagery of the Virgin of Guadalupe, it is an illustration of a poem that hung on my wall as a child, which constantly reminded me of my status as 'other'. Not flesh of my flesh, not bone of my bone...
